Crushed

What a whirlwind of a month it has been and I mean that in every sense of the word. Whewwwww Lord! You guys just don’t know. I don’t really want to go into too many details but I’m just so happy things have turned around and are looking up. One thing to always remember when you’re going through something really hard is there are people who are in tougher situations than you are. I know, I know it sounds sooooooo cliché, and the situation you may be facing seems so real to you, but if you can find some sort of light even for a millisecond during those tough times it helps. It’s so important for us to count it all joy and lean on our faith and trust in God. He truly is the One who fills us up and helps us.
I don’t want to sound like I’m preaching but God is sooooooooo good guys really, really, really good. On a lighter note, I am completely crushing over this velvet trend. I picked up these boots and a few others (soon to come to the blog) a few weeks ago and I am in love. They truly are perfect for fall and winter. I decided to pair them with this oversized sweater from Zara for a more relaxed feel. Perfect fall look! Talk to you guys soon. Toodles J
P.S. Omg guys I completely almost forgot to tell you I picked up Jefree Star’s highlighter “King Tut” and let me just tell yall when I say that highlighter is poppin it is P.O.P.P.I.Nnnnnnnnnnn ok thank you mammmmmm because that highlight goodness is nothing to play with. If you have a few extra dollars ($29 to be exact) please pick this up you will not regret it. I am wearing it in today’s look. Ok fa real bye!

Black Out

This past weekend was pretty awesome, I attended BeautyConNYC for the first time and let me just tell you it was a makeup lovers dream. If you’ve never been you have to go! So many of my favorite makeup companies were there Milani, Lime Crime, NYX, Luxie, Laura Geller, and so many more. Not to mention the swag bags were amazing as well as the freebies and discounted prices. I will definitely be going next year. The following day I got up with my favorite girlie for drinks at a cool little spot in Brooklyn. Across the street I spotted this red wall and just knew we had to snap pictures. So we did, and then enjoyed dinner and girl talk!

Monochromatic Vibes

I seriously cannot get enough of this Olive color. So I decided to just plaster it all over my body  because it’s just that awesome lol lol. Keeping it very monochromatic in today’s post. I seriously love the monochromatic trend it’s easy and looks so simple and chic. Who wouldn’t love that combination? On another note I got an amazing new job this week that I’m still in shock about. God definitely answers prayers and comes right on time. So things have been busy busy busy lately with me jumping into the flow of it all but I am elated.

Plaids

I love mixing patterns and prints. For today’s look I did it in a very subtle way, but still love how comfy and fashion forward this look turned out. Plaid has become somewhat of a neutral for me because the possibilities are endless when styling, which I love. What’s your favorite way to style plaids?

Simplicity

Keeping it simple in an all black fit today. With temperatures warming up it looks like New York will actually have a Spring season, which I’m excited about especially having temperatures in the negatives this past winter. Today’s fit was a no brainier sometimes it’s just easy to keep it easy . All black does just that.

Fur Shrugs

It’s kind of amazing it’s the end of December and I am still able to throw on a pair of sandals. Winter has definitely been good to us in NYC, with temperatures hitting the mid 6o’s as of late. I sure hope it stays this way going into the New Year.

Gotham Girl

They say everyone has an alter ego. A side they don’t always portray but you see it peak out every now and again. When it comes to style I think it’s important to have that. I mean come on who wants to dress the same every day of their lives. BORINGGGGGGGGG!!!! I think mine would be somewhere between punk rock skate board chic and all black all the time. My love for color just won’t allow me to make that happen every day. So, I am absolutely okay with channeling that side of me from time to time, which I did in today’s look. There’s something about wearing all black that leaves a hint of mystery and curiosity. Depending on how it’s styled you can go from sleek, edgy, and glammed up to Gothic inspired and relaxed. I chose the latter. I snagged these chunky suede OTK boots on sale 2 weeks ago and knew they were a little out of the norm for a girl who loves heels. But I figured they would be a great piece to add to my wardrobe for days when that all black skater girl chic decides to show up.

Chunky Knits

All black chunky knits and leather, what a way to say goodbye to fall and hello to winter. These peep toe knee high laced boots caught my eye almost immediately and their comfy too which makes them a number one fave in my closet right now. I love that they can be added to almost any look to add a touch of spizzazz!

Shun Melson

Shun Melson, celebrity stylist to names like Atlanta Housewives Kim Zolciak, Phaedra Parks, Kandi Burruss and many more. Last week I had the opportunity to sit and chat all things “Fashun”.

1.     What motivates you in an industry that can be so competitive and critical?

“Oh my gosh… I just love what I do, I love making people feel good, and look good. I got fired from Jeffries 10 years ago where I was making a ton of money. I was just so overwhelmed and I was like “what am I going to do” so I decided to just go out on faith and style people on my own. Now 10 years later I have never looked back.”

2.     What tips would you give to those that are looking to follow in your footsteps?

“Well, I have a fashion 101 class teaching stylists how to be a good stylist, and how to survive in this industry. The very first thing I tell them is to “Go The Extra Mile” because some of them just want to go half way and give up. But you have to go the extra mile, you have to network, you have to get out of your comfort zone, and those are just some of the things I teach in my class.”

3.     What trends are you predicting for Spring/Summer 2016?

“Of course floral! Neon prints, pink, burgundy will be big believe it or not, and fringe which is one of my faves right now.”

4.     What are some misconceptions about being a celebrity stylist?

“Everyone thinks it’s super easy. Everyone thinks it’s fabulous and that I’m around a lot of fabulous clothes, and I get to hang around fabulous people. But majority of the time I’m working like 18 hours a day. I sleep on the airplanes; it’s a lot of hard work. All they see on my Instagram is “Aww she has fabulous clothes and around fabulous people, and I can get there too” Then I hire them or bring them on as an intern, and their like “whattttt???”  And they last for maybe a week.”

5.     Name one person you wish you had the opportunity to style.

“I would love to style Rihanna. I love everything about her. She just looks like the type that really listens to whatever you say. If you ask her to dye her hair blue she’ll say “OK I’ll try it”. That’s like the ideal client. You never want to get a client that thinks they’re the stylist because it’s kind of like well why am I here?”

6.     If you weren’t a stylist what would you be doing?
“Something that has to do with clothing. Like I can play in clothes all day. So I would be in merchandising, that was my favorite things to do when I was at Jeffries I could stay in the store all night and just do the window displays.”

7.     What does style and beauty mean to you?

“It’s everything, it’s like my child. I get chills when I talk about it. It’s my world.”

8.     What’s next for Shun?

“After my classes, I definitely want to do a styling book. That’s on my to-do list and my tee shirts are doing amazing now. I started out with a tee shirt line because there was no place I could find tee shirts with African American women on them. The only thing I found was Kate Moss and Marilyn Monroe, so I decided to design shirts with African American women on them and people love them. Several celebrities have been seen in them. That’s just kind of like my passion project. I would love to see them in stores.”

9.     Describe yourself in one word.

“Fashun” F.A.S.H.U.N “Fashun”!
